How to waste your money with good deals or bargains

We all love bargains don’t we? I really like getting items at a heavily discounted price. I’ve noticed that when things are on special there are heaps of people at the shopping malls with their trolleys full of staff.

I can’t help thinking that even though they are picking up discounted items, in the end it at adds up to quite a bit of money.

I love watching these people and the things they buy. Garden arches, different types of toys (some very expensive ones even on special), CDs, DVDs, decorations for the house, fancy shoes and the list goes on.

It doesn’t stop there however, they all stop to get a cup of coffee and a doughnut or whatever they like. Maybe they will put the stuff in their cars and catch a movie. It is an entire day of fun and savings. Oh wait, did I say savings? I am going crazy.

Am I going mad or everyone else is going mad? I remember seeing on the news a few months ago that the total amount of credit card debt in Australia (where I live) is higher than the total amount owed in mortgages. That sounds really strange but facts are facts. The report certainly does not take into consideration people who rent so it is not really comparing apples to apples however it is a good indication.

So when I think about the data from the report and see those trolleys full of stuff, sometimes two full trolleys, I can’t help thinking whether they can afford all of that or not.

Think about it. If you cannot afford to spend $200 in one pair of shoes then you cannot afford to pay the same $200 dollars for a trolley full of stuff. In my view is not about how much stuff you are getting is about being able to afford your purchase.

Something else to consider is whether you need the items you are purchasing. Regardless of your affordability, if you are buying stuff that you don’t need then you being ripped off. If you don’t need new shoes and you only buy them because they are on special then you are wasting your money.

Some people may say that you will save money if you buy the stuff when it is on special. They are not wrong however, I prefer to put my money away, get interest on it and only look for bargains when I need them. There are always specials around.

Do you buy lots of stuff on special and then regret the purchase or end up not using them?

Organise your finances with online banking

Using online banking can be a quick way to take control of your finances. These days online banking offers many tools that can actually hep you to save money. Here are some ways online banking can help you.

Stay up to date with your bills

You can use online banking anywhere and anytime. All you need is access to a computer. Most banks these days also offer you the ability to access online banking from your cell phone. If you are out shopping and your are not sure how much money you have in your checking account you can quickly get your phone out and find out. You can also use online banking to set up alerts whenever a bill is due or whenever you balance hits a certain amount. it is an easy way to avoid unnecessary bank fees.

Preventing overdrafts

I mentioned this in the previous point but I think it is important enough to emphasize it. You can use your online banking to setup alerts so you are notified via email or text message whenever your balance drops a certain set amount.

Organising bill payments

Most banks, if not all, offer you the ability to pay your bills online. They also let you organise recurring payments like your mortgage payment for a full year. Have you ever missed  credit card payment? You can automate those payments with your bank and ensure that you pay at least the minimum account on your cards avoiding late fees and extra interests.

Seeing total expenditure to each vendor

Another feature of online banking is the ability to see how much money you have paid to a given vendor. If you think you are paying too much in your phone bill then go online and check how much you have paid to your telecommunications provider. This can help you budget and save money.

Exporting your data to use with your personal finances software

Do you use personal finances software to manage your finances? A feature that I find very handy is the ability to export my transaction from my online banking and import them into my personal finances software. I can then very quickly run various reports and track may expenditures/savings.

A few tips to save money

Do you want to save some money? When times are tight and you are struggling to make ends meet you will face the inevitable decision to cut back in some expenses. Here are some ideas to help you to cut back on those expenses without sacrificing too many of life’s pleasures.

Rent a movie. Going to the movies can be an expensive activity. It could add up to about $40 per person. You can still have a good time if you rent a movie and stay at home in the comfort of your couch. Go to the shops and get your popcorn, lollies and sit back and relax.

Do something that you like and that will relax you. The idea from this advice is for you to do something that you enjoy that will help you to relax. It may be a bubble bath or going for a bike ride or just a walk in a pleasant area. Research says that when times are tough it is important for people to do something that will relax them, something other than shopping. Just do something that will not break the bank.

Cook at home. Eating at restaurants can be very expensive. Another expensive habit is buying lunch during the week instead of taking from home. When I buy lunch at work I always spend about $10. If I take sandwiches or left overs from home it only costs me a fraction of what it would cost if I bought my lunch. If you find difficult to pack your lunch in the morning then pack it the night before.

Use the library. We all pay for the library with our taxes so might as well use them. Go to the library, these days they not only have great books but also DVDs and audio books.

Drink at home. Going for a night out with your friends can be very expensive. Depending on what you drink an glass can sometimes cost more than $10. You can certainly save a few dollars if you stay at home and get your friends over.

Review your budget or create one.  Take control of your expenses by reviewing your budget and cutting back in whatever area you can. If you don’t have a budget then create one. You may be spending a lot more money than you realise. Reviewing your budget can sometimes save a few hundred dollars a month.

Lower the thermostat. There is nothing wrong in putting a jumper on when you are at home. Heating takes up a big percentage of your electricity bill so put on a jumper and lower the that thermostat.

Teach your child how to make money

child-money Want your child to be a millionaire? All parents want the best for their children so why not teach them how to manage and  make money?

Here are a few tips to help you to raise a millionaire.

Hey Junior, this is Money

It is never too early to teach your children about money management.

You can start by showing to your preschooler how you use money to make your daily purchases. You can start by explaining that when you buy the groceries you give them the money and you can then take the groceries home. There are various variations on this theme. You can take your child to an ice-cream shop and give her the money to pay for the treats whilst explaining that you can have the ice-cream if and when you pay for it.

It is also important to teach a child where the money comes from. Up until a couple of years ago, my daughter thought that whenever we need money we can go to the ATM machine get however much we want. Teach your child that you go to work and get paid for the work you do. Clearly explain that if you don’t go to work you don’t get money and therefore cannot buy the all the things we need for your daily life.

Once your child knows how to count you can teach her how to sum up the money in the piggy back in order to figure out how much she needs to buy a particularly coveted toy.

The idea is to explain your child that money does not come from trees or, in my case, from the ATM or the bank teller. It is vital that the child understands the mechanics and dynamics of money management.

Encourage the entrepreneur in your child

Your money education should not only include work. I personally believe that the most important money skill to have is not to go to work, earn it, save it / invest it. I believe in passive income, which is a totally different beast and in some ways very hard to acquire.

Encourage your child to believe in her ideas and to pursue them with potentially a business mindset. It is very important not to discourage your child. If your child is really passionate about something, say computers, encourage your child to be creative and to pursue her dreams. Encourage the entrepreneur spirit.

The real money is in passive income. Your child needs to learn how to make money from passive sources.

Get your child to work for the money

Start teaching your child that it is very hard to earn money. It is very hard to get your earned income and even harder to get passive income.

Create a system whereby your child can earn cash by doing some work around the house. You can make a list with the tasks and how much she will earn for each task she completes.

Another interesting strategy is to set objectives. May be to earn 5$ by the end of the week. This way your child can work through the process of setting a target to purchase something and work for the money to pay for it.

Help your child by setting up a savings account

If you have the cash you may consider small monthly contributions to a savings account in your child’s name. This can certainly go a long way and you can take advantage of compounding interest over the time of the investment.

Start with this strategy early, the sooner you start the more interest you can accrue over the years.

Start today, think about a strategy and position your child to take control of his/her financial future.

Making money through blogging - developing highly profitable topics using Google AdWords

supplydemand

If you are into blogging you know that it can be very difficult to make money. You’ve heard it many times that the secret is on attracting the crowds. There is more to it, you also have to ensure that you are choosing topics that are highly profitable.

There are many articles on the web that tell you how to attract traffic into your site. Most of them say that the more traffic you get the more chances you have of making money either through advertising or via selling some sort of product. It is true, the more people come to your site the more chances you have of making money.

If you are opening a restaurant you probably want it to be in an area with a lot of foot traffic as opposed to corner where not many people go to. The same applies to blogging, if you want to maximise your chances of attracting traffic to your site and to make money, you need to write posts on a topic that will attract many people.

If your objective is not to make money then it is different, you can choose whatever topic you are interest in  and write about it.

So the question is how to choose topics that will attract many people to your blog and therefore maximise your chances of making money?

The following points shows some ideas on developing highly profitable topics:

“Why do you rob banks?” the officer asked the infamous  bank-robber Willy Sutton moments after arresting him… “I go where the money is.”

I am not suggesting that we go and rob banks, the idea is to go where the money is.

Write about topics that are in high demand and low supply

You need to be really passionate about your chosen topic.

Say for example that you like cars. You read all about them, you dream about them, you are just crazy about the topic. Ok, you have a topic. But how do you choose what to write about within your topic of choice.

It is all about keywords. Brainstorm as many keyword-focused topics as possible that are related to your topic of choice.

Your next step is then to take out the topics that offer low profit potential. In other words you need to go where the money is.

The only way of discovering the highly profitable topics is by research.

Research key words and topics that are in high demand

You need to tap into the unlimited amount of information available on the internet.

Use the power of Google’s AdWords. It is a tool that gives you the ability to identify keywords that have a high demand and therefore offer the highest potential to attract traffic into your site and therefore improves your chances of making money.

The following image shows you the AdWords result on the search phrase “making money”.

AdWords

As you can see from the image above, there have been over 4 million searches on the key word “making money”. It is no wonder it is on the title for this post.

By using this tool you can find not only the topics that are in demand but also much more information to help you to develop highly profitable topics.

Supply

Once you find the topics that are in high demand you need to look at the supply.

You need to find out how many sites already provide content for the key words you are researching. That’s the supply. You find this information by simply doing a search on the keywords and finding out how many hits you get back.

Make a list of the key words and their respective demand and supply.

You best words are the ones with high demand and low supply.

Once you have the list and found the potential key words to use the next step is to write, write and write a bit more. Don’t forget to tag the keywords in your posts and link to as many related sites as possible and get links into your posts.

This way you will attract as much traffic as possible and increase your chances of making money.

Thriving 30 million dollars business from a school project. Find out how she did it.

30milbusiness At 16 years of age, Lindsay Phillips had an idea to create flip-flops with straps that could be changed during a school project. It is project that this year her company will bring $30 million in revenue says AOLSmallbusiness.

The idea is very simple, you buy one pair of flip flops and renew their appearance with new straps. They look new and different every time and can be worn with different clothes depending on the occasion.

Her company is now producing other products such as shopping bags, scarves and sandals for children.

It was initially a hobby until someone told her that it was a brilliant idea that she could make some money from it.

I watched an interview with her in an Australian breakfast show, yes her products will now be sold in Australia as well, she said that the key was for her to believe in herself and do something about it.

She could have stuck with her hobby, but no, she had some initiative and took her idea to the next level.

The key is believing in yourself, getting motivated and, mostly importantly, doing something.

If you want become financially independent, pay off some debt, get a new job or whatever your project might be, the key is to be motivated and so something, act on it. You will never know the outcome if you don’t do something.

I learned a lot about it from a book called the Science of Getting Rich and almost everyday I read success stories about people that believed in themselves, took their idea to the next level and became very successful.

Do something today, you never know what you could achieve.

How to make some extra money

extracash Do you need some extra cash. I think we can do with a little extra cash. The following sections describe some of the strategies you can use to make some extra cash.

Dog Walking

Dogs are man’s best friend. Unfortunately we sometimes get all too busy to take our dogs out for a walk. If you enjoy walking you can start your own dog waling business.

You need to be a dog lover, that is a must. You also need time to perform this type of service. You need to understand how to take a dog for a walk, there are a few resources on the internet that can help you. Be professional, get a police clearance and make sure that when talking to customers you show that you will love their dogs as much as they do and that their dog will be cared for.

Don’t forget the raincoat for you and for the god, the leashes of course, water for you and the dog and anything else that you might need.

I think that this can be a very enjoyable way of making some extra money.

Selling unwanted items on eBay

If you search the internet on how to make some extra cash you will invariably find this topic. There are many stories that I can tell you and you can find loads more stories about people that have made a bit of money via eBay.

It can be a bit hard. I would recommend that when you are sell something, try to put yourself in the position of a buyer, think about what the buyer would want to know about the product, shipping and the price. I have tried to sell some items on eBay and I was not successful. There was nothing wrong with the products themselves, I just had the price set too high. once I changed it the items were sold fairly quickly.

Have a quick walk around your place, do you really need all of the items you see around you? How about the books that you haven’t touched for a few years. You will probably find a few items that may give you a few hundred bucks.

Blogging

I will start by discouraging you, blogging is very hard. What I find hard is to attract visitors to my blog. I would say that before you start your blog you should think about your competitive advantage. How will you differentiate yourself from the competition? Why should people come to your blog?

Once you have the first question answered you need to put your head down and write. The key is to write and write and write. And by the way, when you get tired, write a bit more.

Blogging can put money in your pocket in a few ways including adds, affiliate marketing, selling advertisement space and many other options.\

Adds is by far the most common way of making money in your site. All you need to do is to select an add provider, sign up and place widgets in your site. The widgets are the placeholders where the add provider will show the adds on your site. Then the only thing you need to do is to wait for your visitors to click on those adds. Every time someone click on one of them you get a bit of money.

Affiliate marketing puts your blog in between a potential customer and a seller. Your work is to refer traffic to another website, if the people you refer to buy something then you get a cut of the profit, There are some affiliate programs that you get paid based on the amount of traffic you send to the site, It is definitely something you should look at if you have your blog.

Selling advertisement space. All you need to do is to reserve an area on your website with good visibility and you rent that space to organisations wanting to advertise on your site.

Buying items on eBay and selling them for a profit

Another interesting way of pocketing a little, or a lot, extra cash is to buy items on eBay and sell them for cash. You may find a bookshelf that needs a little TLC or anything that you can buy at a cheap price, improve it a little and then sell it for a little profit.

I would however recommend that you be careful because there are no guarantees that your items will be sold or that they will be sold for a higher price than what you paid for them in the first place.

Do a little research before you execute this strategy to try to maximise your chances of success.

Making money from your hobby

This strategy is also common, We all have hobbies, something we like to do and because we do so much of it we get really good at it, There may be a lot of people out there that want to learn about it or buy something from you. If your hobby involves making something then you have a product that can be sold. Otherwise you can start teaching, blogging or even delivering online courses on the subject of your choice.

The strategies above will not make you reach but they certainly have the potential to put some extra cash in your pocket.
